If you're wondering about the name, as
many are, it's a character from a series
of books called 'A Tale of the Malazan
Book of the Fallen' by Steven Erikson.
He was a Sergeant of the legendary
Bridgeburners squadron, and served under
higher ranks beforehand. The
Bridgeburners, were the Emperor's elite
division of the 2nd Army, they were
known as members of the Old Guard. The
Old Guard being the name given to those
who were loyal to Emperor Kellanved.
After The Emperor's dissappearance,
return, and what was thought to be his,
and his Master Assassin (Dancer, his 2nd
in command, leader of the Talons)
assassination. In reality, they both
found a way to ascend into godhood, and
rule the House of Shadow. They foiled
Empress Laseen's plans, and she in turn
decided to have everyone loyal to the
old Empire killed or go missing. The
Bridgeburners were attacking the city of
Pale. A city they'd under seige for some
time, in the Genabackis Campaign. The
elite troops were tunnelling under the
city's walls, when magic caused a
collapse in 4 of 5 tunnels. Of almost
1,400 Bridgeburners, Whiskeyjack, his
men, and the scattered remains of a few
other companies were all that was left.
Over 1,300 Bridgeburners died. All who
lived, went on to great ends. That's
just the first book, Lord
